Estrada Real International Marathon 2018

18/06/2018

About the unprecedented Carlos Tadeu de Paula Monteiro Short Track Challenge held in the historic center of Mariana (MG) on Saturday (16), about 1.200 athletes faced the 2nd stage of the International Chaoyang Mountain Bike Estrada Real, on Sunday (17) the beautiful mountains of the city in two MTB XCM routes: the 67km complete has 2.390m of accumulated altimetry (climbs!) and the reduced route (48km) has 1,590m of altimetry.

The first girl to return to the competition arena in Minas Gerais Square was the short track champion, the young athlete Giuliana Morgen (Sense Factory Team), who celebrated her 15 year old birthday with the double victory in Mariana (MG). “Just out of the way I fell, I grazed my knee, my electronic gearbox had disconnected, then I hit Di2 and moved on. It was 40 minutes up, we took the final technical track. I’m very happy.”, says the champion GiuGiu, who had a double victory on Saturday and Sunday in the XCC and XCM races respectively.

On the whole course, elite athletes – male and female – literally flew on the tracks. There were basically two mountain ranges outlived by the participants and magnificent views.

“The race was defined in the final mountain range.”, said Lukas Kaufmann (Cannondale Brazil Racing), runner-up in the race in Mariana (MG), for the general men’s category.

In the women’s section, the two-time Brazilian MTB marathon champion, Viviane Favery (Cannondale Brasil Racing) managed to open a small advantage in the initial climb, gaining ground from the current champion Letícia Cândido.

“I was very focused on the start, because I had several technical problems in other races and today I did my race, the sport is a test that goes far beyond the physical. In the end I got to do an excellent race. I knew that the first part of the race would be very fast. I tried to keep a strong group. On the final climb I rode in the limit. I’m thrilled about winning.”, said champion Viviane Favery, from São Paulo (SP).

Young talented Giuliana Morgen, better known as GiuGiu, the current Pan American Junior champion, pedaled hard to win the title of the Carlos Tadeu de Paula Monteiro Short Track Challenge.
